Omaha Lancers vs Fargo Force — October 25, 2024
For quite some time now, I’ve been wanting the opportunity to photograph hockey at a high level. On October 25, 2024, I was given my first opportunity to photograph the Omaha Lancers taking on the Fargo Force in Omaha, Nebraska. The Lancers play in the USHL (United States Hockey League), a tier one junior hockey league that produces a number of NCAA players and professional players in a variety of leagues.
The Lancers didn’t get the result they were hoping for as they lost 3-2 in overtime, but it was a well-fought game. They even gave me the opportunity to photograph from between the benches during the second period.
First Period
For the first period, I photographed mostly from the ice-level suite. Finding clean glass to photograph through was a challenge, but it actually went pretty well. The Lancers had the lone goal of the period.
First Intermission
During the first intermission and second period, I was able to go between the two team benches and photograph the game. Of course, I had to get a few shots of the Lancers mascot during intermission as well.
Second Period
Both the Lancers and Force each netted a goal this period.
Third Period
I started the third period back in the same ice-level sweet as the first, but quickly decided that I wanted to get a vantage point from above, so I moved to an empty club.
Overtime
After 60 minutes of play, the Lancers and Force would need extra time to decide the winner. Fargo controlled the majority of the overtime play and netted the game-winner late in the extra frame.
My Final Thoughts
I’m so glad that I was able to finally get into the world of photographing high-level hockey and I want to thank the Lancers for the opportunity. My favorite shooting locations were between the benches and up above from the club seating. Hopefully, I can join the Lancers for many more games this season.
