Vikings: Valhalla — Season 1

Liam Theo Creative reviews the new Netflix series Vikings: Valhalla

Based on the viewership numbers for this Netflix series, it would seem as though many have already seen it. If you’re one of the few that hasn’t, I highly recommend that you do so. The Vikings: Valhalla IMDB page states that this show is a spinoff of the original Vikings series.

The Storyline

I love the storyline for season 1. The story fits the accuracy of how many relationships and interactions would have gone in that time. The people in power just wanted more and were willing to do whatever it took to gain that power. The king of England decided he was meant to cleanse the land of Vikings and break the Dane Law. Naturally, the Vikings sought revenge and succeeded in obtaining it. The viking king, Canute, threw his followers a curveball by deciding to rule along side the new boy king, Edmund.

I’ve seen some complaints about the show deriving from historical accuracies. While, yes the show has decided to take certain liberties, they aren’t major enough to effect the overall show. For example, the top review on IMDB states that Jarl Estrid Haakon is played by a black woman and in reality was a white male. Keep in mind that this is not the history channel, this is a fictional show and some changes are made to appeal to potential viewership. Quite frankly, I think Caroline Henderson played her part very well and the colony of Kattegat was very interesting and appealing.

Being a show about Vikings, you can expect plenty of battles, blood, and gore. Heads are separated from bodies and many get blades through their torso. Surprisingly, there really is just one episode that has “true” nudity featured and even then it’s slight and brief, the show is more so focused on the story.
